5 Steps To Creating #InstaAwesome

5 Steps To Creating #InstaAwesome

“You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.” Dale Carnegie

Ok, so I am pretty sure you do not need convincing that Instagram is the platform of the moment for so many people and businesses. And by that I mean, the impact of relationship and biz building for creative small businesses and the humans who lead them and work in them. #fact

But there are still so many myths and misconceptions on how to create awesome with the platform so I thought I would share what I know to be true and where to begin… And yes, I have written about this many times, and yes, I believe it cannot be repeated enough. So here we go…

Why
First and foremost, as with any platform, we always start with why, as the great Simon Sinek says. The objective. As in, why are we engaging on Instagram and why does anyone care? Instead of focusing on followers, focus on creating value, consistently. Yes, consistently. Let me say that one more time, consistently.

1. What is your story?
People respond to stories. Brands and businesses tell stories. What is yours? And while we are on that topic, what is in your about section? It matters. Why are you, who are you, and how do I connect with you?

2. What value will you bring to the conversation?
Listen more than you talk. But when you do talk, what value are you bringing to the table? This is not about self-promotion, it is about creating value.

3. What will your theme be?
All the best Insta’s have a theme. A look. A feel. A vibe. They exude energy. And your theme needs to be consistent with your brand identity. Your overall brand look and feel.

4. What hashtags will you use to connect, engage and become more discoverable?
Yes use hashtags, even more important, use them consistently. Unless you are Beyoncé, then clearly there is no need, we will seek you out. But if you are not Beyoncé, here are the general guidelines for local businesses…

a. Use popular hashtags that are consistent with your content and story. i.e. #ombre #braids #bridalhair #fitspo #athlete
b. Use branded hashtag, always. In my case, its #passionsquared
c. Use your local hashtags. In Portland, its #PDX, in Downtown LA, its #DTLA, find yours by searching hashtags on Insta or Google it.

5. How much time are you willing to invest in building relationships, engaging, and content creation?
Ok, this is where the pro’s and amateurs divide. If you are serious about building relationships, engaging, and listening, then you will invest the time. Period. How much? It depends on your content and engagement plan. I spend 2+ hours a day on Instagram. It is my primary social platform. And yes, a majority of my referrals come from Instagram. Is there a secret? Nope.

BONUS Tips!
When capturing, creating and posting content, please keep these things in mind…
Take a gazillion photos so you can choose the best one. One photo is not enough. How many are enough? You will know when you get the money shot.

Only post quality stuff. Really, did Nina just say that? Duh. Yes, I did, cause it needs to be said.

What do I mean by quality stuff? Lighting, Background, Detail, Clarity

Want to see how some others are doing it? Follow these passionate and talented humans. And look for themes, quality, consistency, storytelling, backgrounds, lighting, clarity, and detail. And educated eye and is an awesome eye. And why do I share these? Because I know for a fact Instagram has helped empower their biz + their lives. And I only work with facts. Not hype. Not theory. Simply facts.

Here is the audio version of this post. Thank you so much for listening.

One of the most common questions I get asked about Instagram is about how to share your beautiful images to your Facebook biz page.  The question came up again on a recent webinar along with a request for a step by step. So a BIG shout out to Brenda and Dawnette for inspiring this post.

Here we go….

Step One
Log in to Instagram, go to your profile page and click on the little wheel thing in the upper right hand side of the page.

Instagram step by step one

Step Two
Click on Share Settings

Instagram step by step two
Step Three

Click on your name. It should show the name of your Personal Page that is connected to your Business Page. If you have not yet connected your Instagram to your Facebook personal page, it will ask you if you want to connect, etc. Do that. Then click on your name.

Step Four
If you manage one business page, that page name will appear and you simply select that page. If you manage more than one business page, select the business you want to SHARE your Instagrams to.

Step Five
Start sharing your awesomeness!

Thank you again to Brenda and Dawnette for inspiring this post. Are you sharing your awesomeness on Instagram? Let’s connect! You can follow me @passionsquared

Scheduled Posts- A Facebook How-To

“Any fool can know. The point is to understand.”

Albert Einstein

We were working with a client the other day and were talking about planning and had a big AHA! We realized that many people with Facebook Business Pages do not know about the super handy feature called Scheduled Posts.

We firmly, 1000% believe that the social web is about real time engagement, two-way communication and building relationships, which means being very active on your pages. However, we see this as a great tool for when you want to take a vacation, have an exact plan of your posts for the week, or know that you will be out all night on New Years Eve and want to sleep in.

What it is NOT is a way to remove yourself from making authentic daily connections with your community such as posting shout outs to clients and team members, posting awesome pics from the day in the salon, commenting on posts from others on your page, responding to inbox messages, etc.

Here is how it woks. It’s super easy.

Step One
Create your post just like you always do.

Facebook
Step Two
Click on the little clock on the left hand side of the Status Box.

Facebook
Step Three
Select the Year, Month, Day and Time you want the Post to go LIVE.

Facebook
Step Four
Click on Schedule. When you do, this little box will pop up to show you your Post is scheduled and where to find it if you want to edit or delete it.

Facebook

Step Five
If you want to Edit or Delete the Post, you can go to Edit Page in the Admin Panel and click on Use Activity Log. You will see all of your scheduled posts and can edit them by clicking on the little arrow drop down thing on the right.

Congratulations!  You have successfully scheduled your post. You are awesome. It’s time to celebrate!

Connecting Social Pages to YouTube How-To

“Life without you is like; Facebook without friends, YouTube without videos, and Google with no results…”

Unknown

YouTube is changing the way we view and consume media, for better for for worse.  And beauty and YouTube go together like peas & carrots, peanut butter & jelly or hairdressers & coffee.  You get our drift. Over 1 million results come up when searching beauty, hair and hair how-to, is one of those search results your channel?

If you have a YouTube channel for your brand or salon, there is one really important step you must take to ensure all of your social channels are connected, which is a big part of discovery on the social + digital web.  Meaning, where else can people engage with you.

Here is a simple How-To. Enjoy.

Step One
Log onto your YouTube channel, go to your “home page” and click Edit on the right hand side of the screen.

YouTube
Step Two
A box will appear at the bottom of this area.  Type in the social or digital platform name you want to add.  Then type in the URL (web address) where you want the link to take people. (be sure it’s your unique URL address i.e. www.facebook.com/passionsquared, not just www.facebook.com)

YouTubeTwo
Step Three
Once you have added the Name and URL, simply click Apply. It’s always good to test the links just to be sure you are connecting everything to the right place. And if it got messed up, no biggie, just click on Edit, delete it and begin again.

YouTube three
Congratulations!  You now are officially more connected.  It’s time to get busy liking, favoriting, and creating video content for your fans & followers.

Instagram Badges How To

Instagram Badges and Other Cool Stuff

“When Instagram was down, I ran around town shouting “like” at flowers, dogs and expensive hamburgers”

via @laurenlaborde on Twitter

It’s clear that Instagram continues to be the latest social obsession.  Over 10 million photos mentioning Thanksgiving were shared on Instagram on Thursday, a new record, WOW!

In a blog a few weeks ago, we shared about the new Web Profiles, one step closer to connecting your Instagram creations with the world.  Now they have added Badges, to connect your Instagram Web Profile to your website or blog site, which will increase your engagement + connections.

How To Add the Instagram Badge to Your Site

Step One
Go to your Web Profile by typing in the URL www.instagram.com/your Instagram name here and click on your name, then click Badges.

Step Two

Click on the Badge you would like to embed into your site.

Step Three

Copy the code and embed it into your site.  If you do not know how to embed code on your Blogsite or Website, ask your Webmaster, IT guy/gal (smart person), or whoever in your world helps you with this kind of stuff.

This is what the Badges look like once they are embedded. Cool, right? Click on the Badge and see where it takes you!

To learn more about Instagram Web Profiles, check out our previous blog on the topic, then go check out your page, and start sharing the love with your community.

We are still using Statigram on our site, which is awesome too.  We have also claimed our Webstagram page, also awesome.

Running Instagram Contests on Statigram
On a total side note, if you are interested in running a Photo Contest on Instagram, Statigram has a super easy Toolkit to help you run contests, which can increase the fun and engagement of your community.  Go to Statigram to learn more.

We will most likely switch to the official Instagram Badge as we expect Instagram Web Profiles to ultimately be more engaging then some of the other platforms. But only time will tell, as is with everything in this wild and wonderful social evolution.
