Movember

Staches Saving Lives

“It’s not the men in your life that matters, it’s the life in your men.”

 Mae West

“During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in the US and around the world. With their Mo’s, these men raise vital awareness and funds for men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.” Movember website

We know we are a couple weeks into Movember but there is still time to jump in, help build awareness around this very important cause and have some fun with your male clients!

Check out this infographic on how Movember works and to pick your fave stache style.  We heart.

Change for a Dollar

“True heroism is remarkably sober, very un-dramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others, at whatever cost.”

Arthur Ashe

This short film by Sharon Wright gave us goose bumps.  We know there are many everyday heroes amongst us who are truly changing the world for the better.  If each of us would simply slow down and take the time to be present (and really see all that surrounds us), we are sure to see and be inspired by more of these quiet heroes who are making the world for a better place for us all.

PS:  The victims of Hurricane Sandy still need our help.  If you can, please donate your time, money or by sharing information on how to help.  To donate money, please visit the NCA Disaster Relief Fund or the Red Cross.  Thank you.

Oh Sandy

We’ve all seen the photos now, the news, the destruction, the lives lost from Sandy.  We also have witnessed people coming together, being kind to one another, helping friends, family and even strangers.

The social + digital web has allowed us to connect, share news, get updates on our loved ones.  It also can help us come together to help people who are in need.  Each one of us can do our part, whether with our time, our money or both.

We discovered over 600,000 images on Instagram using the hashtag #sandy, as well as several MILLION Tweets.  During the heart of the storm, “We are OK” was the most popular status update on Facebook, bringing some type of calm and comfort to millions who were so worried about their loved ones.  WOW.

Here are a few ways you can help those affected by Sandy’s destruction.

Disaster Relief Fund
The NCA Disaster Relief Fund was established in 1955 to assist salons in rebuilding following the devastation of natural disaster. Over the course of five decades, the fund has been there for professionals in times of dire need.

Red Cross
Each year, the American Red Cross immediately responds to about 70,000 natural and man-made disasters in the U.S., ranging from fires to hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous materials spills, transportation accidents and explosions.

FEMA
FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.

We can all do our part to help the victims of this devastating natural disaster.  Even if you cannot give money, you can share resources on the social web, volunteer your time, anything, just do something. We thank you, and those in need thank you.

Born This Way

Born This Way

“We believe that everyone has the right to feel safe, to be empowered and to make a difference in the world. Together, we will move towards acceptance, bravery and love.”

Born This Way

October is National Anti-Bullying Month.  There is an alarming trend both online and off of people being mean and hurting one another.  We believe we can all do something to stop this trend and empower our youth, to encourage acceptance and love.

There are several organizations that are doing something to help our youth hold their head up high, to be strong and brave and to show them there is hope.  One of the organizations that we love is the Born This Way Foundation, created by Lady Gaga and her beautiful mother, Cynthia Germanotta.

Check out this video, which shows some staggering stats on the state of bullying in our world.  We love that Lady Gaga chose her song Hair for this video.

While cyber-bullying is something new to our world, the online space has also given organizations like this the ability to reach millions of young people where they live, online. This is the empowering part of the social + digital revolution, and we are so inspired by these movements and how they are truly making a difference in the lives of young people.

If you have been a victim of bullying, know someone who is, you know how horrible it is and the sometimes fatal consequences.  Its time to stand up to bully’s, to show our youth that it’s cool to be your authentic self, and there are millions of people who love and accept them, just the way they are.

If you are passionate about empowering our youth like we are, there are several organizations you can support.
Here are a few of the ones we love and support:

Why Give?

You are, as our friend David Wagner of Juut Salons would say, “daymakers”.

You touch people through your work in meaningful (and sometimes profound) ways; and in your ‘spare time’ your giving has collectively moved mountains to make the world a better place.

Each year, salons, spas and beauty companies donate tens of millions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours in support of a long list of amazing charitable causes.

Your giving makes better lives. We’re so proud to be a part of your world.
