Getting to No

Focusing is about saying no.  -Steve Jobs

As I observe small businesses and what makes one stand out from the other, I find myself almost always going back to a concept I learned long ago from one of my greatest biz mentors and all around awesome humans Luke Jacobellis.

So much of how we ultimately create awesome in business is about the daily decisions we make. What we say yes to, what we say no to. It has to do with focus, strategy, discipline, courage and clarity. The term that Luke taught me that is forever ingrained in my mind is “creeping elegance”. Now you may be thinking, what the heck does that mean? Well, let me explain.

Example #1
You Gotta Be Everywhere
Someone in your business, maybe even you, was told it’s important to be on every social platform. So you go ahead and just start running, spending time, money and energy, creating content, claiming your platforms, trying to get buy-in from the team, etc, etc. A few months down the road, you notice that you are spending more time and money than you intended, with little to no results. In fact, you may have already abandoned the platforms. What happened? Well, instead of saying no to some and yes to others, instead of sitting back and building a plan, instead of determining which platforms fit best with your strategy, you just dove in and said yes to everything.

Example #2
If It Worked For Me, It Will Work For You
Another small business owner calls you up and tells you you must try this marketing program that worked awesome for them. You get all excited and dive right in, spending time, money and energy to try and make it work for you. A few months down the road, the program is not getting the results you want, and is abandoned, just like the social platforms example.

Example #3
We Must Have Balloons
You decide it’s time to re-invent your service menu. A few others on the team suggest that you not only do menus, but that you also do brochures, cards, signs, pins and balloons (trying to make a point here with the balloons). You get busy, and excited, and next thing you know, you spend a gazillion dollars and blow through a million trees, all the while all you really wanted was a new menu and in fact, that was all you needed.

Example #4
I Cannot Live Without This Product
You get pitched a new product line to carry or use in your business. You love it, it fits with your brand and strategy, so you say yes. A few months later, you get pitched another one, or a team member gets all excited about something and instead of having the hard discussion of saying no, you say yes. Then another, then another. A few months down the road, you wake up to excess inventory, a multitude of vendors, money tied up and wonder, how did this happen?

These are just a few examples of “creeping elegance”. We all get so “busy” that we say yes instead of no. But what we do not realize at the time is that the yes we are saying turns into possibly months of time, money and energy wasted that could have been put towards systems, products, services and programs that fit the strategy and get results.

Yes I know, it’s tough to slow down and make mindful decisions, but that is part of what we signed up for when we chose to own a business. If you have a strategy, which is a gotta do for being awesome in business, it becomes easier to say no as well as yes. Getting to no may be one of the best things you can do for your sanity, your bank account, your team, your customers and your business. Give it a try.

Example #5
You Can’t Miss This
This is probably one of the most important ones for those who find themselves pulled in a gazillion directions and feeling burned out more often than you would like. We all know FOMO (fear of missing out), well let me introduce you to JOMO (joy of missing out). You see, there is no possible way we can be “everywhere” if we are going to keep our sanity. And as leaders and small biz owners, we must do our best to stay present, grounded, and yes, sane. When we are clear on our purpose, promise, and strategy, we begin to learn that while that event or that program or that party sounds like a ton of fun, I am going to pass this time. Read that, and let it sink in. I AM GOING TO PASS THIS TIME. Try it. And just feel your shoulders drop.

Solutions + Scarifices hd

Solutions + Sacrifices

“Every solution to every problem is simple. It’s the distance between the two where the mystery lies.” Derek Landy

Oh, isn’t life funny… Just when we think we have it all figured out, a situation sneaks up on us and surprises the heck out of us. Well, maybe it’s just me, but I had a big one just happen that I felt compelled to share. There is such a big lesson in it for me, which means maybe there is one for you too?

Whether it be in business or in life, we face problems every single day, well, to be honest, maybe every single hour. Where the awesomeness comes in is in how well we can identify the actual problem, and find a solution and keep pushing. The joys of creative small business ownership. Ahhhhh..

So here is how the story goes…

I have spoken a few times; well maybe more than a few, about my rescue dog Faith. She is special in that she is the most kind, gentle, loving, sweet but very scared, anxious and timid. She clearly was very much abused as a baby, as I have been with her since she was only 3 months old.

Once we moved to downtown Los Angeles, she began to become even more fearful. It began well, and then deteriorated quickly. I was at a compete loss. I brought in experts, doctors, dog whisperers, trainers, and the whole nine. She began to get better and better. So much so that I signed another year lease on my loft.

Then in late January, her brother Zen became very ill, and it was traumatizing to the entire family. And from there, she began to decline, quickly. In and out of the hospital with Zen nearly every few weeks it seemed became more and more difficult for all of us. And Faith kept getting worse. She did not want to leave the loft, and cowered the second she walked onto the sidewalks outside, in fact, many days, she needed to be carried. She began to lose weight, and was just miserable.

Meanwhile, my heart continued to break. Guilt, sadness, shame, confusion… and so many sleepless nights, wondering what the heck I was going to do. Months went by, and I just could not figure out how to care for Zen, who now has a terminal diagnosis, and ensure Faith was living the happy life she deserved. I was at a complete loss.

One thing I knew for sure, I would need to create a plan to move. To move out of the city, to a space that I was hopeful would be awesome for her. But that was not going to be happening anytime in the immediate future, like I just cannot move today, so still, at a complete loss and feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders. And more guilt, one of the worst, non-productive emotions out there.

Every 4th of July, I always get out of the city, as Faith has always been deathly afraid of fireworks. So last week, I packed up my babies and myself and headed south, to San Diego County where both my Mom and Stepmom live. Ahhhhhh, we would finally get a few days away from the noise and Faith could get a reprieve, if only for a few days. Then it hit me…. Like a ton of bricks… Like OMG, how could I have not seen this before? Like wow.

My Stepmother has a three-acre ranch, she has three loving dogs and horses and so much space to play and roam. She is home nearly every day, and her entire live revolves around her animals. And she LOVES Faith. She also just recently lost one of her dogs unexpectedly to a terrible illness and has been heartbroken ever since. Do you see where this is going?

The solution was always available to me. It has been there this entire time. And I did not see it. I did not see it because I was not willing to see it. Because in seeing it, that meant I would have to sacrifice something, me. My emotions. My heart. My guilt. My belief system that said “my sweet rescue for sure would never be OK away from her Mommy”… a very self-centered yet common line of reasoning. But it was not in the best interest of Faith. I was so focused on how I would feel, I never once even thought about all the options that were available to me. I was too deep in the problem.

You see, the solution is always there. It’s closer than you think. Than I think. Than we think. But it may take sacrifice. Whether it be sacrifice in comfort, not wanting to have a tough discussion, admitting we made a mistake, pride, ego, defiance, confusion, whatever. But I promise you; the solution is closer than you think. Way closer. It actually may be literally right in front of you. Or in my case, a few hours south in San Diego County.

I am not new to sacrifice; in fact, the last six years it could have been my middle name. I sacrificed a career, financial security and nearly all my material belongings to live a life of purpose, awesomeness and authenticity. To create a life of meaning, in my case, took a ton of sacrifice. And in looking back, I would do it all over again to be in the place I am today; grounded, at peace, fulfilled, and living a life of service + awesomeness.

I am happy to say, while I am missing my Faith so very very much, she is incredibly happy, happier than she has been in a long time. And Zen and I, well, we are good too, taking life one day at a time, and yes, working on finding a new space to call home in hopes that Faith will want to come back to us someday soon. The thing is though… I will be OK either way, because I can see clearly now. I found the solution. It was always there. It just took some time to see it.

Choice and Change

Choice & Change

“Change almost never fails because it’s too early. It almost always fails because it’s too late.”

Seth Godin

Choice and Change
Here is the audio version of this post. Background music (snoring) compliments of Zen Louis Kovner. Thanks so much for listening.

I work with small business owners every day, myself included, and one of the themes that runs through nearly all I work with is the challenge of making the choice to make a change. Whether it be a change in systems, strategy, people, resources, planning, whatever. Sounds like a simple theory, but not so simple to commit to and ultimately execute.

One of my favorite Seth Godin quotes is… “You don’t run a punch press or haul iron ore. Your job is to make decisions.”

As a small business, whether it be one person or 10, in order to create awesome and achieve our dreams, we have to get really comfortable with making decisions. And that begins with a choice to do so in order to get the change we are seeking.

We are so good at over complicating things. But it really is as simple as making a choice. If we want to change the outcome of our efforts, we have to look objectively at what choices we are making, every single day.

There is so much freedom that comes when we accept the fact that we have a choice. It also totally freaks people out because when we accept that, all the responsibility for the outcome comes back to us. Ugh!

Here are a few examples I experience on a daily basis, do any of these sound familiar?

  1. You want to increase referrals and you are a service business? Create a referral program and embrace referral platforms such as YELP.

  2. You want to increase holiday traffic and reservations, try an inbox marketing campaign like my buddy Benjamin Jay did at the Hair Loft ltd (check out our Facebook chat about it from November 11th)

  3. You want to have a happy, healthy culture? Get rid of the bullies and tantrum throwers.

  4. You want to get out from the day-to-day and begin to work on your business vs. in your business? Begin making the decisions today that will allow you to transition from worker to leader.

  5. You want to build relevant social platforms? Wake up a half hour earlier, stay up a half hour later, or find someone in your world who is passionate about it and create meaningful content, and share it.

  6. You want more time to do the things you love? Make time. It’s a choice.

So I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. We all have the power to make choices. The key is in making the decision to choose the action that will ultimately get us to the result and change. I see it every day. It’s not easy, but it can completely change the way you lead and manage your business, and in the end, help you create more awesome.

Decisions

What do you make? Decisions.

Seth Godin

Seth Godin

As many of you know, I heart Seth Godin. It’s one of those professional crushes so to speak. Yes, I have many of those.

His mind, his brain, his ability to turn what may seem complex into the most simple to understand thoughts. Today is a great example of that as Seth talks about the importance of making decisions.

Seth’s Message On Making Decisions
On today’s Blog, Seth says, “You don’t run a punch press or haul iron ore. Your job is to make decisions. The thing is, the farmer who grows corn has no illusions about what his job is. He doesn’t avoid planting corn or dissemble or procrastinate about harvesting corn. And he certainly doesn’t try to get his neighbor to grow his corn for him. Make more decisions. That’s the only way to get better at it.”

Faith Without Works Is Dead
While I am a deeply spiritual person, I do not subscribe to any formal religion. But this statement, which does come from the Bible, is one of my favorites and also one of my mantras.

When I speak about passion, dreams, faith, hopes, believing in yourself, and vision boards, I also mention taking action and executing on those passions, dreams and hopes. Why? Without taking action and making decisions to execute on your ideas, they are just that, ideas, thoughts and dreams that will never materialize into anything. Thus, faith without works is dead. Think about it.

My Secret Recipe
As I wrote in a blog a while back, titled I Think I Can, I spoke about how to turn your dreams into reality. My recipe is take two cups of passion, add a cup of skills mixed with a gallon of execution, and you are well on your way to doing big things. It really is that simple. So many times we miss the last ingredient, and find ourselves no closer to our dreams, simply because we missed that last and most important step.

So my challenge to you, today and always, is to start making decisions. Take action on your ideas. Your dreams. Your hopes. Yes, make that vision board, they are awesome, but also take the time to figure out how you are going to take action on those visions. You can do it, I know you can. I have faith in you. Now get to work!
