Mad Love for Larisadoll

Here is the audio version of this post. Thank you so much for listening.

Social listening and healthy stalking does have its privileges. And that is exactly how I discovered and met one of the most passionate and inspirational hairdressers I have ever known, Larisa Love aka @larisadoll on Instagram.

If you read my blog or listened to my Masters Series interview with Winn Claybaugh, then you have heard me speak of this awesomeness creator. I have been watching and listening to her for almost a year now.

One of the most awesome things I get to do at Passion Squared is connect with the best of the best, study them, learn from them, and many times actually meet them offline, then carry that message to my clients and community.

I’m not gonna lie, I am a big fan, and when Larisa and I set our date to meet, I got butterflies in my tummy. Why? Respect. Plain and simple. I knew this girl was special, but I also knew I only knew her online persona. And awesomely enough, she also works in the most beautiful bungalow at Butterfly Loft Salon in Encino. So butterflies were for sure an appropriate emotion.

Larisadoll

So what did I learn about what makes Larisa so awesome?

1. Authenticity
Larisa is the real deal. As beautiful inside as out. This is probably the most important thing to learn about her success. Authenticity is everything in today’s world, and you can be Insta famous, have a gazillion followers, but fall flat offline if you are not truly authentic.

2. Focus + Direction
Larisa has such insane clarity of direction and focus for such a young (in years) human. People often ask me what is one of the most common challenges I see working with small businesses in the beauty and wellness worlds. My answer. Focus and direction.

3. She Knows Her Why
Larisa is crystal clear on her why, promise, purpose and target market as a brand. She is consistent in her work, her brand identity, her boundaries, and how she presents her brand and creates stories that matter on Instagram. She knows her brand why. Remember, as the awesome Simon Sinek says, “People don’t buy what you do, they buy WHY you do it.”

4. Instagram Can Build A Business
Larisa learned very early in her short 4-year career as a hairdresser that Instagram would be the platform to engage, connect, build relationships and ultimately grow a business that has her booked until 2016 with 800 people on her waiting list. She chose one platform, she chose to focus intently on it, and she has never wavered. She spends at minimum 2 hours a day creating content, posting and engaging with her followers. You may think 2 hours is a lot of time. My question back to you is are you happy with your marketing plan and how it’s helping you grow your business?

5. Consistency
This could be Larisa’s middle name. Her beautiful work speaks for itself. But what matters even more is her consistency. In branding, in hair, in engagement, in posting, in content creation, and in voice.

Can every stylist have 40K followers and an 800-person waiting list? I don’t really know. But what I do know, is the above traits and actions are just some of the reasons Larisa has been SO successful, and it also happens to be traits and actions I see in many others creating awesome in their business.

As I have said before and I will always say, there is NO secret or magic pill. Creating awesome takes commitment, courage, consistency and most of all caring. And Larisa is all of those things and so much more.

If you are not already, follow @larisadoll and learn. Then go out and create your own kind of awesome.

A big shout out of gratitude and thanks to Larisa, her beautiful, kind and talented BF @dylankelly and David and Alexis, the awesome owners of Butterfly Loft Salon for such a special evening. I am in awe of all of you and so grateful to know you.

Inside My Reality

This is by far one of the most difficult posts I have ever written. But my heart is telling me it’s time. Passion Squared is about truth. The truth about our lives and our businesses. When I saw that my friend, hairdresser, photographer and film maker Damien Laliberte started the Inside My Reality documentary project, I knew it was time to share one of my darkest secrets.

A little over 6 years ago, I almost took my own life. I have suffered from mental illness since I was a child, but did not know the depths of my condition till it was almost too late. I was one of the lucky ones. There is so much more to be done. I still struggle every day of my life. But I am alive and can do my part to help the millions of others that suffer as I do.

This is my buddy Damien. I sat down with him to learn more about his project. This is his story.

Damien Laliberte

Nina:
Tell me a little bit about Inside My Reality.

Damien:
It’s an independent film project voicing the every day reality so many of living under the shadow of mental illness feel. It’s not happy, it’s not sad, it’s just honest life.

Nina:
Why are you so passionate about this topic?

Damien:
I suffer from a mental illness, a lot of friends and family do, and there have recently been a string of suicides in my small rural town that has really made me realize that something is wrong with how we’re handling these topics.

The materials and education (if any) we give to young adults on these topics is so often laughably bad – my favorite example is to reference the anti-marijuana movies from the 50’s and 60’s, like Reefer Madness. That’s how off the mark the stuff we’re giving kids today is, and they KNOW it. So of COURSE it’s not helping.

Nina:
Why should I support this project?

Damien:
Unlike a charity, I’m not out to endlessly raise money. I’m not trying to raise awareness, sell ribbons, sell t-shirts – I am making something. Something that once made, will exist and be available and will not come back asking for donations next year to fund more ribbon and t-shirt sales.

Nina:
How are you using the social + digital space to fuel this project?

Damien:
This project is almost entirely fueled by the social networks I travel in over the Internet! I’m a big Twitter guy, but my YouTube video first got attention by being shared around town. Then came a website, which got too much traffic, so it was replaced with a Facebook page which is almost up to 800 likes as of writing this.

It’s how I communicate with people about this project, it’s how people reach me, it’s how teens and people who want to be part of the project reach me, it’s how my project material is disseminated into the world. It’s how I’ve been reached for interviews and professional connections. None of this would have been possible without the extreme power of having networked connections online.

“I think it’s time to start listening to them.” Damien Laliberte, Inside My Reality

Thank you Damien, for your friendship, your courage and your commitment to making a difference. I love you. Infinity and beyond.

To be part of helping our future generations who suffer from mental illness like Damien and I do, visit Inside My Reality, make a donation and share if you feel inspired. You can also keep up with Damien and Inside My Reality on Facebook and Twitter.

We thank you for your support.

If you or someone you know suffers from depression or has suicidal thoughts, there is help. A few of the groups I support are The Trevor Project, It Get’s Better, National Suicide Prevention Hotline.

“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind there are few”

Shunryu Suzuki

Nicoletta Gauci

Meet Nicoletta Gauci, an international stylist and educator who has had her eye on her dream since beauty school, which she just graduated from in 2008.  Fearless, beautiful, focused and talented are just a few words to describe Nicoletta.  There is much we can learn from the beginners mind.

Nicoletta has already had a career many dream about.  She sat down with us to share her thoughts about the power of the social web and how she is using the space to shape her career and achieve her dreams.

Passion Squared: What are your current goals as a stylist & blogger?

Nicoletta: I want to be able to continue doing what I love, which is styling hair and creating art while collaborating with other people with the same passion or varied passions that accelerate and enhance mine and visa versa.

Passion Squared: Which social platform are you focusing on to reach that goal?

Nicoletta: I have primarily been using Facebook, Hairbrained, Pinterest and Instagram along with blogging through WordPress.

Passion Squared: Why those platforms?

Nicoletta: Through Facebook I have been able to connect with current and future clients, friends and other industry professionals using my network that already existed before I decided to make a brand page.  I feel like it is the simplest way to connect with your current audience and build connections with people you would normally not have access to by showing them your brand via your page and posts.

To grow my name within the industry I have chosen Hairbrained, communicating through images. Hairbrained serves as a direct feed to hairstylists and other industry professionals, which is sometimes hard to get at the beginning of a career.

I’ve created a blog which is now more of a platform to share all my other social media sites I use that acts as an interactive place for my followers to write about trends and give them how-to’s.

Pinterest and Instagram are similar but seem to be more so for obtaining connections outside your immediate circle of influence. Instagram is like a virtual shareable scrapbook and Pinterest is a shareable dream board deepening your connection and reach.

Passion Squared: What did you do?

Nicoletta: I have used Facebook as a place to share my new and up coming work and Hairbrained to do the same but for images, which really focus on the hair, most importantly I always credit the whole team so that everyone benefits from the posting.  Pinterest I use more so to communicate my aesthetic both in my personal style and in hair and I often create boards targeted towards certain projects.  Most recently I have begun to use Instagram as a live feed to the daily going-ons of my life in the beauty industry.

Passion Squared: What have the results been?

Nicoletta: I started my Facebook in March 2012 and through networking have reached 350 likes, my blog, also started in March, has about 1000 followers which I now feed my Mastery by Esani entries and other social media posts onto.  Hairbrained had been fantastic for me to extend my reach to other hairstylists and stay hopeful that my eye is on the right path.  My Pinterest has also had a great flow of traffic and has increased the level of communication with the teams I work with.  Lastly, Instagram, my latest addition and addiction has grown by about 200 people in 2 months and has increased the buzz within my own network as to the work I am doing.

Through this self taught experience I have been able to take on the role of Social Media Design Leader at The Mastery by Esani and create added value to my career.

Passion Squared: Any other thoughts?

Nicoletta: Use your social media platforms to inspire and lift people up. We have the power to change the way a person feels or thinks with one image or quote posted online…change it for the better.

To catch up with Nicoletta and experience her passion around creating art and sharing it with our world, jump on over to her social pages and say hello.

“I am seeking. I am striving. I am in it with all my heart.”

Vincent van Gogh

J. Scordato SalonJ. Scordato SalonJ. Scordato Salon

Meet Jacqueline Scordato, hairdresser, color educator and owner of J. Scordato Salon in beautiful Tucson Arizona.  Jacqueline has made a commitment to learning everything she can about how the social + digital space can help her grow her salon and more importantly, her team, to help them achieve their goals and dreams.  That is what we call true leadership, and something all owners can strive for.  Awesome.

Passion Squared: What are your current goals as a salon owner?

Jacqueline: As a new salon/salon owner I am constantly striving to create buzz and awareness that we are here and ready to serve our guests, while striving to build our salon culture.  Through that it’s a goal to help each team member find their journey in this industry whether it be print work, getting involved in fashion shows, or whatever else motivates.

Passion Squared: Which social platform are you focusing on to reach that goal?

Jacqueline: Right now we are focusing on our Facebook page.  Attending the social webinars have really opened us up to how important it is to focus and master a platform before moving on to adding another one to the mix.

Passion Squared: Why that one?

Jacqueline: We decided to start with and focus on Facebook.  Most of the age group we are targeting is found on Facebook so it made sense to begin there.  It also seemed to have the most information available on how to use it to build our business.

Passion Squared: What did you do?

Jacqueline: Webinars have definitely been key to understanding Facebook and exactly how it works.  In addition to that we joined a local social media networking group to help create more buzz by cross promoting on our page and meet other businesses.  We post daily with a picture, a caption, and an easy to answer question to try to engage people who’ve liked our page.

Passion Squared: What have the results been?

Jacqueline: We’ve been experiencing great results… It took about three months of daily posting on our page and commenting on others posts to start seeing a steady influx on our page.  Our own guests have started looking forward to our posts and have been interacting as well.  We’ve just hit four months of posting and are now experiencing at least one referral a week from our Facebook page!  So excited to see where it takes us after a few more months!

Passion Squared: Any other thoughts or comments?

Jacqueline: When I first opened the salon I was excited and active on our Facebook page and then began entering as many social platforms as we could.  With free time being a rarity I began to slow down on posting and became overwhelmed with so many different sites.  After beginning the social webinars with Passion Squared I began to look into Facebook again and have made it part of my morning coffee/wake up routine.  Now as I’m becoming more comfortable and efficient with Facebook, I can’t wait to branch into another platform!

To connect with Jacqueline and the J. Scordato Salon Team, you can find them engaging on their social pages…

The Teals

Passionista Profile: The Teals

“Family is not an important thing, it’s everything.”

Michael J. Fox

The Teals

Meet The Teals, a beautiful family of uber talented artists, educators plus one fantastic photographer.

Ryan, Deannalyn and their daughter Tuesday (who just graduated from beauty school!) are by far one of the coolest families in our industry.  What makes The Teals so awesome?  They are authentic, kind, creative and have turned their passion for hair into a successful family business.  Ryan and Deannalyn are masters of long hairdressing, and won the NAHA Salon Team of the Year in 2008.

Passion Squared: What are your current goals as a salon owner?

Tuesday Teal: The current goals that our salon has set are specific; we make them detailed so that we have more to work toward. For us we want a balance and rhythm of our guests to be happy, as well as to be continually growing.

We are working toward a specific number of friends on social media places. Our newest project is we want as much local traffic as we can. We have local only cards that give everyone in the area a chance to come in a meet us.

Passion Squared: Which social platform are you focusing on to reach that goal?

Tuesday Teal: Well I think that the best way to make friend is by shaking hands. You have to be real. If you are trying to just get random people in your chair that you don’t care about, this is not the industry for you.  I like social media because it’s so easy to keep in touch!

Facebook is amazing because you can talk to people and they get nice comments about their hair.

I also love Instagram because there is not a lot of talking just pictures. The fun part is whatever you post is cool no matter what it is. Funny things in the salon are even funnier on Instagram.

The results of using Instagram and Facebook are fantastic; our clients love watching our lives play out.

Passion Squared: What did you do with those platforms?

Ryan Teal: One thing I did was to let my teenage daughter handle most of the social media. I don’t feel like any thing I do is super interesting mainly because I came from a pre-computer generation.

Tuesday, my daughter, grew up with Facebook and knows how to have what I call the Facebook face, which says “we are always having fun and everything we do is great.”  For me everything we do is great I just didn’t think any one cares. But I guess they do?!?!?!

Passion Squared: What have the results been?

Ryan Teal: According to our Google Analytics we had 111 visits to our salon website in the month of September. 105 of those visits were new visits. We also have recently claimed our YELP page and have become more active promoting YELP.  Two weeks ago, we had 4 new clients call in just one day who found us on YELP.

In my opinion that kind of return is amazing. A business card is typically 2 inch by 3 inches so very little can be printed on it. How many people can you hand out a card to in a month?  I feel like spending more time & money on the social media side and less on the traditional advertising side, it’s the only way to grow your business in our new world.

You can find the The Teals traveling the country at shows sharing their passion for hair, at their super cool salon in Portland, Oregon and on the social platforms they play on.
